Managing curly hair is a whirlwind of trouble. You sleep with tamed hair and wake up with frizz and strands poking at very awkward angles. For years, I've worn my hair straight, when I'm a curly at heart. One time, I wore it curly to work and had my workers divided. Some hated it some loved it. Some thought I permed it. I had no idea how to manage it, so I started dabbling with natural hair oils and waxes, allowing my hair to dry naturally out of our sheer laziness. Since then, I've rarely straightened my hair, neither have I burnt my hair or my fingers.

My hair, which is some what thick, has a very particular style and so I have found products that work cohesively together to maintain its short curls. These products will still work for long curls, curly bobs, the whole shebang.
First in the line up, hair masques and treatments. You need to nurture your curls. You'll be seeing better hair days this way.

I've be using Rahua 'Omega 9 Hair Mask,' which is an in shower hair mask that you use after shampooing. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and wash away. I still apply conditioner right after and even with conditioner, this mask is weightless and non-greasy. This mask is saturated with healing and hydrating ingredients, featuring Ungurahua oil, sunflower seed oil and Quinoa. Ungurahua oil is rich in Omega-9, which has revived my hair from the brittle dryness caused by years of heat damage. It works deep within the hair shaft, taking care of each strand. With that, sunflower seed oil and Quinoa have softened and strengthened my hair, which means less split ends and fall out. Which reminds me, I once got caught cutting my split ends during class, by the head of the school. Epic humiliation.

I love hair oils- they offer such a deep and hydrating treatment. La Bella Figura 'Bohemia Verde Aromtic Hair Elixier' carries such clean and enriching ingredients. I love, love, love how simple the ingredients are and yet each chosen for a purpose. What a sublime selection of argan oil, avocado oil, camellia, olive and coconut oil, pure jasmine, black pepper and rose geranium essential oil. This Bohemia Elixier can be used before or after styling, damp or dry to tame frizz and add shine. I didn't use it in this way as I felt it was a wee bit too heavy for my short curls and I didn't like the way my curls sat. I do feel this would work real well with long curls. Although, it does say it's suited for all hair types. This oil excels as a leave in conditioner, which is how I use it. It says to leave it in for 30 minutes on unwashed hair. I like to leave it over night. This replenished the moisture to my ends giving  a lovely shine. When I have no time to apply the Rahua hair mask in the shower, I like knowing I have an alternative.

Herbivore Botanical 'Therapy Hair Oil' is a stellar product that banishes the crazed morning hair. This plant based oil is made to be attuned with curly hair. It's rich in botanical oils and vitamins, controlling that frizz, adding shine and softness to your locks. It literally smooths down your hair when you've woken up with your curls volumized in all the wrong places and strands standing in all the odd angles. I really enjoy the way my curls look with this oil. I use this mostly everyday, on dry or wet hair and find no build up. Make sure to apply a drop at a time to see what works for your hair as hair can appear oily if  too much is applied. I also use this for my 2.5 year old daughter, who has thick, curly hair. It creates soft curls with a lot less tangles prior to her bath.

You can see in the image above how great this oil in combination with Rahua 'Hair Wax,' tames morning hair. I did slightly straighten my fringe.

If you've been struggling with thinning hair, John Masters 'Scalp Treatment' might be your best friend. With 17 certified organic herbs and essential oils, it's therapy for you scalp to maintain healthy hair and add volume. This deep fortifying treatment dives deep within the hair follicle to detoxify and stimulate the scalp with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It's a nutrient dense solution to 'balance sebum production, eliminate free radicals and stimulate blood circulation to the scalp,' motivating hair growth. This treatment is applied as a leave in after the shower and does not weigh your hair down.

I spray this treatment onto my scalp and along my hair line, as I have been noticing thinning over time. I massage it through and style my hair straight after. I've been using this product for about five months and have noticed slight improvements. I haven't noticed any hair growth, might be too early for that, but I have noticed a reduction in overall fall out, which is what I hoped for. I have read from other bloggers that this works well at addressing hair growth (check out the review by Liz from 'Smells Like A Green Spirit'), while with others it didn't perform well.  This is the kind of product that delivers with time and cannot be rushed. Everyone has their own experiences and so while for some it didn't yield voluminous hair or aid in hair growth, for others it did. It does not perform miracles by any means, but by feeding the hair follicles nourishing herbs and oils, you can guarantee your scalp will be in optimum condition. All you can do is try it for yourself if you’re in need of a product like this. Become in tune with you hair and figure out what it needs.  If I hadn't seen any results, I will still use it simply for that fact that it delivers such a wealth of nitrifying ingredients to encourage healthy scalp and hair.

Keep note, if you have a dry, itchy or flaky scalp, please refer to John Masters 'Deep Scalp Purifying Serum,' which might rectify those problems.

Because at times I do apply heat to me fringe to give it a slight wave, I rely on Yarok 'Feed Your Ends, Leave-in Conditioner' spray to prevent split ends and protect my hair from heat damage. This hipster line is all natural, sourced and harvested responsibly and consciously. They are 100% vegan and their products are absent from alcohol, parabens and sulphates. They invest instead in vitamins, minerals and essential oils to give a healthy dose to your scalp and hair.  The most paramount part of Yarok Hair, is that they are cruelty free and 'help to sustain the planet's beauty.' This product does come in different sizes.

If your looking for defined and textured curls, I have that for you too. Yarok Hair 'Feed Your Curls' will give you volume, defined and tighter curls, frizz control, tame fly always, prevent further split ends, manage tangles and add shine. Feed Your Curls' works well with my style as I have one side shorter than the other, with an undercut. This lightweight cream tightens up my curls, helping to tuck in the curls around the undercut, to avoid straightening. You can create different styles with this cream, on wet and dry hair, details are listed on their site. It's clear how this cream is a multitasking superstar that performs superbly. Silicones, parabens or mineral oils only work to weaken and damage the hair. Alternative? Yarok relies on organic oils, organic herbal extracts, organic essential oils and plant sourced vitamins, to nourish and replenish hair, hydrating each ringlet, naturally.

As per the image above, after I showered, I used Herbivore Botanicals ' Therapy Hair Oil' all over my hair, concentrating on the middle to the ends of my hair, Yarok 'Feed Your Curls' on the middle and ends of my hair, twirling the strands as I go and Rahua 'Hair Wax' to complete and hold my styleIt's clear how this cream can create tighter and more defined curls in contrast to the Herbivore 'Therapy Oil'. I alternate between the 'Therapy Oil' and 'Feed Your Curls,' depending on how I want my curls to look. At times I use both. '

To complete my style, I use Rahua 'Hair Wax' for hold, texture, flexibility and versatility. This whipped like texture aids in taming fly-ways while imparting texture, definition, hold and gloss to your locks. It is 100% natural, without giving you the stiff crunchiness that has become quite outdated. I use this wax everyday and it feels lightweight, with no build up, washing effortlessly.  It is quite clearly adept to many skills.
According to Rahua, you can 'apply on wet hair for moldability and sculpting and on dry hair for lift and definition.' This wax offers light to medium hold depending on the amount you use. On dry hair, It isn't strong enough to sleek back stubborn hairs that refuse to sit in place. It does however give my curls body and movement, holding my locks and style together all day. Adding a pea sized amount to the roots of your hair will give you volume, but only slightly. I have used this with straight hair and my look did last most of the day, but I had to tousle my hair couple times throughout the day to get back the messy textured look.  I did use this on my three old nephew, to spike his short hair. It managed that well and held throughout the day.
